Man sets himself on fire at National Mall - 10.5.13 - 10.10.13

Mike Nova comments: It takes much more than a simple "struggle with the mental illness" to commit this act. Hopefully, we will learn more details in the future, as the investigation proceeds.
Again, at the risk of repeating myself, I want to say that this chain of recent events is most puzzling and it is very unlikely to be just the coincidence; and, it seems to me that many people might feel and think this way. At this point, I guess, we just have to wait and see.

New Jersey man identified as Mall fire victim - WP

The man who died last week after being found severely burned on the Mall was identified Monday night as a 64-year-old resident of New Jersey, and D.C. police said it was “now apparent that he set himself on fire.”
D.C. police gave the man’s name as John Constantino, and said he was 64, and from Mount Laurel.

Man Who Set Himself On Fire in D.C. Identified

Motive still unclear after he died

Officials have identified a man who self-immolated on the National Mall in Washington last week and later died, but it’s still unclear why he did it.
Authorities say John Constantino, 64, of Mount Laurel, N.J., doused himself with gasoline on Friday in a central part of the park and set himself on fire in front of passersby, who tried to douse the flames. Police said he was conscious at the scene and died at a hospital that night. But he was burned so badly that DNA and dental records were needed to identify him, the Associated Press reports.
What is unclear to police is his motive. U.S. Park Police Lt. Pamela Smith told the AP that she did not know of any signs he carried or that he spoke of any reasons for what he did. Katy Scheflen, a Justice Department attorney who was nearby, did not hear him say anything before setting the fire. But she said  another man with a tripod was standing nearby and had disappeared before police got there.
“He appeared to be waiting for something to happen,” she said. “After it happened, he was gone.”

Mike Nova comments: What IS the identity of this man? Does not the public have the right to know, at least eventually? Most likely his identity is exactly what holds the clue in further investigation and it was withheld for the purposes of investigation. I hope that someday we will learn the truth.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Dylan Thomas writing
Last updated: 06 November 2008
Thomas' poem for his dying father, exploring the themes of grief and death.
Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night was completed in 1951, late in Thomas' career. It is one of his most popular and easily accessible poems. Written about his dying father, the poem explores the personal experience of grief and death, and places it within a wider context. Like Fern Hill before it, the poem reflects Thomas' developed, more simple style.
Perhaps the most striking thing about Do Not Go Gentle is the contrast between its form, which is strict, regular and controlled, and its message, which incites the man to "rage against the dying of the light". The form itself is a villanelle which includes a series of repetitions, and maintains just two rhymes throughout. It enables Thomas to build his poem in gradual stages while keeping the focus on his most important message.
The actions of each small man are placed in contrast to the vastness of universe. The light shed on the world by the wise man is pale in comparison with lightning, and waves produced by the good man disappear in a green bay. Similarly, we are subtly reminded throughout, an old man's rage will be ineffectual in the face of death.
It is the urgent call to his father to fight death which distinguishes this poem from two others which were written on a similar theme. Both Lie Still, Sleep Becalmed and Elegy call for peace and calm as an antidote to suffering.
In all three poems, perhaps in deference to his father's atheism, Thomas does not resort to biblical or Christian imagery as a comfort at a time of death. In Do Not Go Gentle there is a sense of the natural world as a spiritual force which is bigger than individual man, while in Lie Still, Sleep Becalmed there are hints of Viking and Classical paganism in the reference to the "wandering boat".
The power of Do Not Go Gentle lies in its straightforward approach to the theme, which is aided by the artificial restraints that are placed on it by the rhyme scheme. Once again, Thomas displays his strength as a scholarly poet who was self consciously aware of the traditions with which he was aligning himself.

Mike Nova comments:
This "Olympic" fire parade, it seems and feels to me, is deeply ironic, sad and almost grotesque in its obvious symbolisms and allusions; and it is very difficult to escape the harrowing impression that all this preceding chain of tragic events was prearranged and planned to lead to this almost macabre and surrealistic culmination, which revokes the associations with Nazi torch parades (not out of line with Putin's emotional and biographical background) on one hand and with "Пир во время чумы" - "Feast in the times of plague" on another. I wish I would be wrong and mistaken, and it is not for me to investigate these events and to search for the truth, for proofs or disproofs. I just share my impressions with you even if they are very subjective and might be somewhat skewed, because I think that these impressions, as imperfect as they are, might be helpful in this search for the truth, and I do not think that we should settle for anything less or different than the complete truth, for all sorts of reasons. If these impressions are correct or even partially correct, it would be, in my opinion, simply insane, crazy, irresponsible and suicidal to plan and arrange them, whatever the underlying rationale behind them is; and if they indeed were pre-planned and arranged, it might be just mostly one man's obsessive need for revenge and his hatred and inferiority complex, which are the possible motivating factors. This whole thing makes me feel sick and profoundly saddened, puzzled and at loss. It is difficult to know at this point where the truth is, but we do have to find it. Remember: "You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free."

Sounds interesting, Vovchick! How do you feel lately? Do not get yourself an early burnout; poor Russian folks, surrounded by the forces of darkness still need some "source of heavenly light" dispatched on them from the above, even if self-sacrificially self-consuming. Watch yourself, do not expire too late from a sad case of political self-sacrificial self-consumption.
And the torch looks very much like a well known pike fish (and at the same time, and even more so, like The Gates Of Heaven, all snow whitewith rich red silver lining; after self-cleansing in the purgatory? In a way, it is the putin olympic "Red Pussy" Gazprom Big LighterVery artistic, the ennobling European influence is obvious). It also looks (very much in line with the common thread of threat; see below) as a handy tool to bash someone's brains in, a la Mercader. Definitely not mine, honey pie, abandon all your hopes.

Mike Nova comments:
The interpretation of this event as a message (if, of course, the validity of this message, from the same GRU, can be more or less reliably established; and my hunch is that it is the message): "If you start a war in Syria we will unleash the 'For Peace' mass protest movement with many self-immolators, with World press exposure. It will be your second Vietnam, which will destabilise the country and you will burn in hell." The common thread remains the same: the attempt (almost pathological) to threaten and to intimidate, which does evoke, in return, intense rage, anger and an impulse to counteract, as much as you can and should; and more: "sow the wind, reap the whirlwind (- GS)".

A man who set himself on fire on Washington DC's National Mall has died from his injuries, police say.
The man poured a can of petrol on himself before setting himself alight on Friday. Police are investigating the motive for the act.
Passing joggers used their shirts to try to extinguish the flames.
The man was so badly burned that he will have to be identified using DNA and dental records, police spokesman Araz Alali said.
Officials said earlier that the man was still conscious when he was flown from the Mall to hospital on Friday.

The incident came a day after police shot dead a woman after chasing her car through the centre of the US capital.

Collapse )

Mike Nova comments: methinks, they want Bout out, and badly. It is not very clear why so badly, I think it is more than just not leaving their people behind (I do not think that they give a shit that much, just as before). Most likely they (he - V.V.P.) are/is concerned that Bout sooner or later will start singing and will implicate the whole chain: Bout > Sechin > Putin and the system of sharing the profits from arms sale: "otkat", specifically implicating V.V.P.'s  profit share, and by extension the similar mechanism in other "enterprises", which had accumulated by now into handsome around $100 Bills. Obviously that would mean huge political drawbacks, possibly leading to Putin's removal and possible subsequent prosecution and/or sudden deterioration in health, etc.
Or Bout may start singing after Vovchick is not around anymore (which is very likely because he will not face a retribution against his family in this circumstance) and it will be a blow to V.V.P.'s historical legacy, and , apparently this is what he is concerned about at this point more than anything else (is the end near? Perhaps, perchance...).
The possible implication in this message, if it is interpreted correctly, is: "we will continue shitting until we get our Horse out, in our horse trading pursuit". My personal opinion would remain the same:

"В одну упряжку впрячь неможно Коня и трепетную лань":

they are not on the same plane and Bout is not extraditable (apparently this issue is exactly what Putin was referring to in his laments about the absence of extradition agreement between the US and Russia in his discussion of Snowden affair). This obsessive insistence only confirms, indirectly, that Snowden was lured in and is used as a bargaining chip.

Sacrifice (Elton John song) - From Wikipedia

Background and writing[edit]

"Sacrifice" is inspired both by the Aretha Franklin song "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man" and described as a Percy Sledge song by Elton. The song is beloved by both Elton John and Bernie Taupin and deemed a bookend of sorts to their first hit "Your Song". Bernie has said he is surprised he wrote it, and said in an interview, "I think 'Sacrifice' is one of the best songs we've written." The song is not a typical love song, but rather a song about a breakup of a marriage where the loss of the relationship is "no sacrifice."
Although the single was successful, Elton John did not tour Europe in both 1989–1990 to support the Sleeping with the Past album (with the exception of one appearance in Knebworth Park on 30 June 1990) touring only in the U.S. and Australia. The 1989 European tour was, instead, in support of the Reg Strikes Back album, with no material representing Sleeping with the Past. In all shows that were done to support Sleeping with the Past in 1989–1990, Elton played this song solo on his RD-1000 Roland Digital Piano.

A genetic analysis indicates that the women who founded the Ashkenazi Jewish community of Europe were not from the Near East, as previously thought.

Genes Suggest European Women at Root of Ashkenazi Family Tree

Over the last 15 years geneticists have identified links between the world’s Jewish communities that point to a common ancestry as well as a common religion. Still, the origin of one of the most important Jewish populations, the Ashkenazim of Central and Eastern Europe, has remained a mystery.
new genetic analysis has now filled in another piece of the origins puzzle, pointing to European women as the principal female founders, and to the Jewish community of the early Roman empire as the possible source of the Ashkenazi ancestors.
The finding establishes that the women who founded the Ashkenazi Jewish community of Europe were not from the Near East, as previously supposed, and reinforces the idea that many Jewish communities outside Israel were founded by single men who married and converted local women.
The study, published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications, is based on a genetic analysis of maternal lineages. A team led by Martin B. Richards of the University of Huddersfield in England took a fresh look at Ashkenazi lineages by decoding the entire mitochondrial genomes of people from Europe and the Near East.
Earlier DNA studies showed that Jewish communities around the world had been founded by men whose Y chromosomes bore DNA patterns typically found in the Near East. But there was a surprise when geneticists turned to examine the women founders by analyzing mitochondrial DNA, a genetic element that is separate from the main human genome and inherited just through the female line.
Unlike the Y chromosomes, the mitochondrial DNA showed no common pattern. In several of the smaller Jewish communities it clearly resembled that of the surrounding population, suggesting a migration pattern in which the men had arrived single, perhaps as traders, and taken local wives who then converted to Judaism.
But it wasn’t clear whether or not this was true of the Ashkenazim. Mitochondrial DNA tends to change quite rapidly, or to drift, as geneticists say, and the Ashkenazi DNA has drifted so far it was hard to pinpoint its origin.
This uncertainty seemed to be resolved by a survey published in 2006. Its authors reported that the four most common mitochondrial DNA lineages among Ashkenazis came from the Near East, implying that just four Jewish women were the ancestresses of nearly half of today’s Ashkenazim. Under this scenario, it seemed more likely that the Ashkenazim were the result of a migration of whole communities of men and women together.
But decoding DNA was still quite expensive at that time and the authors of the 2006 survey analyzed only a short length of the mitochondrial DNA, containing just 1,000 or so of its 16,600 DNA units, in all their subjects.
The four mitochondrial lineages common among Ashkenazis are now very rare elsewhere in the Near East and Europe, making it hard to identify with certainty the lineages from which they originated.
With the entire mitochondrial genome in hand, Dr. Richards could draw up family trees with a much finer resolution than before. His trees show that the four major Ashkenazi lineages in fact form clusters within descent lines that were established in Europe some 10,000 to 20,000 years ago. The same is true of most of the minor lineages.
“Thus the great majority of Ashkenazi maternal lineages were not brought from the Levant, as commonly supposed,” Dr. Richards and colleagues conclude in their paper. Overall, at least 80 percent of Ashkenazi maternal ancestry comes from women indigenous to Europe, and 8 percent from the Near East, with the rest uncertain, the researchers estimate.
Dr. Richards estimates that the four major lineages became incorporated into the Ashkenazi community at least 2,000 years ago. A large Jewish community flourished in Rome at this time and included many converts. This community could have been the source of both the Ashkenazim of Europe and the Sephardim of Spain and Portugal, given that the two groups have considerable genetic commonality, Dr. Richards said.
Doron M. Behar, of the Gene by Gene company in Houston and a co-author of the 2006 survey, said he disagreed with Dr. Richards’ conclusions but declined to explain his reasons, saying they had to appear first in a scientific journal.
David B. Goldstein, a geneticist at Duke University who first detected the similarity between the founding mothers of Jewish communities and their host populations, said the new analysis was well done but that the estimate of 80 percent European origin for the Ashkenazi maternal lineages was not statistically justified, given that mitochondrial DNA lineages rise and fall in a random way.
A recent analysis based on the whole genomes, not just mitochondrial DNA, of Jewish communities around the world noted that almost all overlap with non-Jewish populations of the Levant, “consistent with an ancestral Levantine contribution to much of contemporary Jewry.” Dr. Richards said that the finding was compatible with his own, given that the Levantine contribution was not that great.
Another recent study, also based on whole genomes, found that a mixture of European ancestries ranged from 30 percent to 60 percent among Ashkenazi and Sephardi populations, with Northern Italians showing the greatest proximity to Jews of any Europeans.
The authors of this study in Nature Communications, led by Gil Atzmon of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, noted that there had been mass conversions to Judaism in the early Roman empire, resulting in some 6 million citizens, or 10 percent of the population, practicing Judaism.
Dr. Richards sees this as a possible time and place at which the four European lineages could have entered the Jewish community, becoming very numerous much later as the Ashkenazi population in northern Europe expanded from around 25,000 in 1300 A.D., to more than 8.5 million at the beginning of the 20th century.
