M.N.:

I say, IMVHASPO: Spy now, spy tomorrow and spy always! It always was this way and always will be. The more and better you spy, the more efficient and more powerful you are. The key words, though, are: "more and better" - this has to be defined, conceptualized and codified rationally, without too much fuss and hullabaloo, and pragmatically. They will always spy on you, no matter what. Let them (and everyone) protect themselves from spying as well as they can: this becomes their issue and their problem. If you do not spy well, you will not know the truth and will not be able to establish efficient policies and will not be able to practice efficient politics. The ethical matters in international contexts become the subject to fair and mutually agreed upon principles. The call for the unilateral "intelligence disarmament", how this well orchestrated campaign might be called, is hypocritical and hostile; it is the extension of wars and inevitable competition by the means of hostile "soft power": public relations and skillful manipulation of public opinion. Keep your cool and keep going on, with the habitual stiff upper lip and condescending stare. Politics are cynical; they are not based on morals but on the mechanical balances of various types of powers. It is cynical and takes a lot of brazen chutzpah to expect that anyone will diminish, submit and reject their own powers voluntarily, just because their adversaries demand it, shrewdly and maliciously. That's what I think.
