Intelligence and law enforcement officials are investigating how and to what extent Russia is attempting to influence the United States presidential election, according to a new report.
The Washington Post reported Monday that the new probe is underway with James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, heading the efforts.
“This is something of concern for the DNI,” Charles Allen, a former longtime CIA officer, told the Post. “It is being addressed.”
The move to further investigate Russia’s attempts to influence U.S. politics comes after a series of high-profile hacks into party committee servers as well as state elections systems.
In July, Wikileaks released a trove of emails from the Democratic National Committee, leading to the ouster of chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and several other top DNC aides. The documents, released just before the start of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, were widelybelieved to be the work of Russian hackers hoping to cause trouble for Democrats during their big week. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the Democrats’ campaign arm that deals with House races, was also hacked.
“We’ve seen an unprecedented intrusion and an attempt to influence or disrupt our political process,” Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-California) said about the DNC hack.
And just last week, CBS News confirmed that hackers had accessed state election databases in both Arizona and Illinois. U.S. officials said they believed those intrusions were the work of foreign hackers, but did not name a specific country they thought was responsible.
Russia has denied any involvement in the hacks, with Russian President Vladimir Putin saying last week that the country was not responsible. Still, he added that it was a net positive that the DNC documents were released: “The important thing is the content that was given to the public,” he said.

Obama lands in Laos for first U.S. presidential visitby Josh Lederman and Kathleen Hennessey | AP
President Barack Obama has become the first sitting U.S. president to visit the isolated, landlocked Southeast Asian nation of Laos.
(PARIS) — A Paris prosecutor has requested a criminal trial for former President Nicolas Sarkozy over suspected illegal overspending on his failed 2012 re-election campaign.
The Paris prosecutor’s office said Monday it has asked investigating judges to send Sarkozy and 13 others to court in the case. It’s now up to the judges to decide whether Sarkozy must stand trial.
Sarkozy announced his bid for next year’s presidential election last month and faces a primary in November against a dozen other conservative candidates.
In February, the judges handed Sarkozy preliminary charges of alleged illegal campaign financing over an invoice system his party and a company named Bygmalion allegedly used to conceal unauthorized overspending.
In a separate case, Sarkozy has been given preliminary charges of corruption and influence-peddling.

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has warned President Barack Obama not to question him about extrajudicial killings, or “son of a bitch I will swear at you” when they meet in Laos during a regional summit.
Duterte said Monday before flying to Laos that he is a leader of a sovereign country and is answerable only to the Filipino people. He said Obama must be respectful and not just throw questions at him, or else, “son of a bitch, I will swear at you in that forum.”
Duterte was answering a reporter’s question about how he intends to explain the extrajudicial killings in the Philippines to Obama. More than 2,000 suspected drug pushers and users have been killed since Duterte launched a war on drugs after taking office on June 30.
Obama, meanwhile, says he has asked his staff to assess whether it would be productive for him to meet with Duterte. Obama was asked at a news conference in China on Monday whether he intends to meet Duterte, as planned, at a gathering in Laos this week of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Obama said he had heard about the comment and instructed his aides to determine whether it would still be productive to hold the face-to-face meeting.
