Clinton video questions Trump's ties to Putin

Last week, Trump shocked leaders on both sides of the aisle when he called on Russia to find the emails Clinton deleted from the personal email server she used while secretary of State.
"Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing," Trump said a press conference last week, footage of which appears in the Clinton video. 
The video also hits Trump for complimenting the Russian president. 
It displays the text "We don't know why Trump praises Putin" before playing a video clip of the Republican presidential nominee saying Putin has been a "very strong leader."
The video also questions Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort's ties to Putin, referencing his work with a former pro-Putin prime minister in the Ukraine.
"We don't know why Russia is trying to influence this election," the text continues ahead of video clips tying Russia to leaked emails from Democratic National Committee leaders. 
"We don't know what's going on here, and Donald won't tell us," the text concludes. "We'll let you guess." 
Trump has since denied having any connections to Putin or Russia despite saying in the past he has a relationship with the Russian leader.

Also Friday, former acting director of the CIA Michael Morell called Trump an “unwitting agent” of the Kremlin in a New York Times op-ed in which he also endorsed Clinton for the White House.
"Mr. Putin played upon Mr. Trump’s vulnerabilities by complimenting him. He responded just as Mr. Putin had calculated," Morell wrote.
He added, “Mr. Trump has also taken policy positions consistent with Russian, not American, interests — endorsing Russian espionage against the United States, supporting Russia’s annexation of Crimea and giving a green light to a possible Russian invasion of the Baltic States.”

Yes, American Spies Really Think Trump Is Putin’s Guy

In today’s New York Times, former Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Morell initiated a firestorm by strongly endorsing Hillary Clinton for president. His memorable op-ed didn’t simply back the Democrat, her own grave security lapses notwithstanding. Morell went further, tearing down her Republican opponent as “not only unqualified for the job, but he may well pose a threat to our national security… he would be a poor, even dangerous, commander in chief.”
Normally that would be sufficiently lethal coming from a former CIA director, but Morell kept going, castigating Donald Trump as a pawn of the Kremlin possessing overtly pro-Russian views. He minced no words: “In the intelligence business, we would say that Putin had recruited Trump as an unwitting agent of the Russian Federation.”
Uproar ensued at once, and the Trump campaign dismissed the allegation as absurd. Mike Pence, Trump’s vice presidential nominee, lambasted Morell’s former agency as “the same CIA that told the president that ISIS was the JV team”—which isn’t exactly a denial of Trump’s ties to the Kremlin.
Critics have countered that Morell is a Clinton operative, but the former spook boss claims to be politically independent. The only “evidence” he’s on Team Hillary is his current employment with a Washington strategic advisory firm with ties to members of the Clinton inner circle.
Before that, Morell spent 33 years at Langley as an intelligence analyst, winding up as the CIA’s deputy director in 2010. Before retiring in 2013, he served twice as the agency’s acting director, in 2011 and again in 2012-13, enjoying a good relationship with President Obama.
Allow me to say to the GOP now: I told you so. And I wasn’t alone.
In other words, Morell is a typical high-flying mandarin in America’s secret spy empire, the 17-agency behemoth we call the Intelligence Community. These folks tend not to be partisan in a political sense, and if Morell’s a raging liberal and Republican-hater he’s been hiding it well.
Moreover, his depiction of Trump as “an unwitting agent” of Vladimir Putin is shared by many American intelligence personnel, including most of the ones I know. And I know a lot of them from my own time in the Intelligence Community. Among seasoned Russia-watchers and those acquainted with counterintelligence, I don’t know any spies who would substantially disagree with Morell’s comments on the Republican nominee.
In a recent column analyzing Trump’s bizarre comments on Crimea and Ukraine, I explained that his falsehoods uttered on national television meant that the GOP’s candidate “Either is clueless about Crimea and Ukraine, being totally unfamiliar with the basic issues, and decided to pontificate on the subject regardless while on national television. Or he is consciously parroting Kremlin propaganda.”
Morell has chosen my second option for Trump, characterizing him as Putin’s man. The term “unwitting agent” is spy-speak for what Lenin (supposedly) famously termed a Useful Idiot, that is, someone who is duped into spouting propaganda that he may not fully understand. This is a harsh assessment but more charitable than the accusation that Trump’s is a witting agent of the Kremlin.
The case for Morell’s charge is circumstantial but impressive. We have Trump’s repeated business dealings in Russia, dating to the Soviet era, none of them very successful, though that didn’t stop the candidate’s son from declaring in 2008 of the Trump Organization: “Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets. We see a lot of money pouring in from Russia.”

Then there are the top members of the Trump campaign with questionable Kremlin ties. Mike Flynn, Trump’s national security guru, is a retired U.S. Army lieutenant general and former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency who in retirement has lots of nice things to say about Russia. His frequent appearances on RT, the Kremlin’s propaganda network, look suspicious, while his appearance at RT’s 10th anniversary gala, complete with a photo op with President Putin, looks even worse. That Flynn won’t answer questions if he is a paid contributor to the Kremlin’s network has set off alarm bells in Washington.
Carter Page, Trump’s go-to guy on Russian matters, unquestionably was paid by the Kremlin during his employment with Gazprom, Russia’s state energy behemoth. Page consistently spouts pro-Moscow views and reliably takes the Kremlin line on a host of issues. Nobody who’s followed him was surprised that, during a recent visit to Russia, Page publicly attacked the United States, pointing to America, not Russia, as the source of the current difficulties in the relationship between the two countries.
Perhaps most troubling is the pivotal role played by Paul Manafort, Trump’s campaign chairman, who’s spent a lucrative career as a fixer for unsavory politicos and dictators around the world. One of them was Viktor Yanukovych, Ukraine’s corrupt ex-president and Putin’s man, who fled to Russia after he was booted from office in early 2014. It’s not clear if Manafort still has a financial relationship with Yanukovych—which, given his client’s position as a guest of the Kremlin and a ward of its intelligence services, seems like an important question to ask.
There’s a lot about Donald Trump’s ties to the Kremlin we don’t know, but what we do know is bad enough. His campaign is riddled at top levels by people with troubling connections to Moscow. All this is why a lot of American intelligence officers view Donald Trump as a stalking horse, witting or not, for Vladimir Putin. Mike Morell simply said publicly what many veteran spies have been saying privately for a long time.
I know because I’m one of them. During my time in the counterintelligence business, the Trump Organization came up more than once in discussions of American businesses with cozy ties to Moscow. I’m not free to say more—I take my lifetime secrecy oath seriously—but it’s time the American people start to hear the truth.
I was among those who repeatedly warned the GOP that Donald Trump had connections to the Kremlin that needed thorough examination and careful vetting. During the Republican primary, as Trump demolished one rival after another, some of his opponents knew that the real estate mogul turned reality TV star had troubling ties to Moscow.
They did nothing with this information. Sen. Marco Rubio’s campaign ignored it altogether. Even Sen. Ted Cruz, Trump’s most dogged foe in the GOP race, limply brought up rumors of the Trump Organization’s mafia ties. It was too little, too late to matter. Now the Republicans are stuck with a nominee who’s tanking in the polls, who seems programmed to self-destruct, and who’s just been called out by the former head of the CIA as a Russian agent.
Allow me to say to the GOP now: I told you so. And I wasn’t alone. Now Hillary Clinton has come out with a devastating campaign ad highlighting Trump’s dubious ties to Putin and the Kremlin. It’s devastating because it’s based on facts—facts which the GOP knew about long ago but chose to ignore.

Where Do Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump Stand on Russia?

“Is Donald Trump really a wannabe mole for the Kremlin?” one of the headlines of Russia’s main pro-government tabloids reads on Friday. “No wonder two of his wives are from our kind, beautiful, slavic,” Komsomolskaya Pravda declared, referring to Trump’s Czech-American ex-wife Ivana Trump and Slovenian-born current wife Melania Trump.
While the headline is meant to be humorous and the article is written with the kind of bombastic punctuation one could also find on a circus poster (there were at least 33 exclamation marks in the text), speculation about the U.S. presidential candidates’ existing or potential relationships with Russia has increased as the November vote nears. Here are a few key positions that the Democratic Party’s Hillary Clinton and the Republican Party’s Donald Trump have taken on Russia in the past.
Relationship With Vladimir Putin
Clinton: While her term as secretary of state saw her meet with many world leaders, she came into the role as Dmitry Medvedev succeeded Putin as president in 2008. Putin returned in 2012, only months before Clinton’s mandate finished. Even so, the two have an icy relationship.
Clinton in 2008 repeatedly warned Republican President George W. Bush that he should be wary of basing foreign policy on his personal relationship with Putin, and in 2014 she compared Putin to Adolf Hitler. During her current campaign, she took a long pause when asked about her relationship with Putin, before calling it “interesting” and branding him “a bully.” She is keen to maintain U.S. sanctions on his inner circle and to persuade the EU to do so as well.
In return, Putin has taken jabs at Clinton, saying she often engages in confrontational rhetoric at a distance but in diplomatic surroundings engages with him in a much friendlier fashion: “When people cross the boundary of good manners, this attests to their weakness not their strength. But for a woman weakness is not the worst quality.”
Trump: The Republican candidate's relationship with Putin, or lack thereof, has been the subject of much debate surrounding his campaign. In 2013, he claimed to have “a relationship” with Putin and described him as “a stablemate,” and in 2014 he said he “spoke indirectly and directly to President Putin who could not have been nicer.” Last weekend he told ABC he had “no relationship” with Putin and that he had not met him and had “never spoken to him on the phone,”
Although the Kremlin has issued favorable statements about Trump, calling him “lively” and “talented without a doubt,” Putin has also said Russia will not say which candidate it prefers. His spokesman has said he would see no reason to celebrate a Trump electoral victory in Russia, while key Putin allies in Russia’s upper house of parliament and in annexed Crimea have welcomed Trump’s apparent openness to talk to Russia but expressed skepticism that this would still be the case if he is elected. The Kremlin has denied ever speaking with Trump, and there is much speculation about how a relationship between Putin and Trump would shape up.
Russian Airspace Violations
Clinton: Russia has increased air force activity in Europe since the start of the Ukraine crisis, and its airstrike campaign in Syria resulted in one of its jets being shot down by Turkey, after repeated violations. While NATO and some of Turkey’s Western partners supported Ankara’s decision, one that Turkey has since apologized for, Clinton avoided condoning it. Asked if she would shoot down a Russian jet, were it to violate foreign airspace during airstrikes in Syria, Clinton said it would not come down to that.
“That would not happen, because we're going to put up a no-fly zone where the Russians are clearly kept informed," Clinton said. "I want them at the table."
Trump: On this issue, the Republican candidate called for the more heavy-handed response. He was asked if he would advocate shooting down Russian aircraft if they approach U.S. military facilities abroad, as they did with the USS Donald Cook in the Baltic Sea.
“I mean, at a certain point, you have to do something,” Trump told Buzzfeed in May. “You just can’t take that. But it should certainly start with diplomacy and it should start quickly with a phone call to Putin, wouldn’t you think?”
“And if that doesn’t work out, I don’t know, you know, at a certain point, when that sucker comes by you, you gotta shoot,” Trump said. “And it’s a shame. It’s a shame. It’s a total lack of respect for our country and it’s a total lack of respect for Obama.”
Russia’s Annexation of Crimea
Clinton: The U.S. has been instrumental in uniting Western condemnation of Russia’s annexation of the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014. The event triggered the imposition of U.S. and EU sanctions on Russia that have since been extended. Clinton considers condemning the annexation and upholding sanctions as crucial, though believes the U.S. should go further than it has, opening the door to sending lethal aid—something hardline Republicans such as Senator John McCain have pushed for.
“We have to do more to get back talking about how to we try to confine, contain, deter Russian aggression in Europe and beyond," she said in 2015. "And try to figure out what are the best tools for doing that. And don't lose sight of the Arctic because we're going to have a lot of issues up there as well."
In January of last year she said the U.S. should send more funding to Kiev and provide “new equipment, new training for the Ukrainians,” though it is unclear if that would involve heavy arms.
Trump: One of the major policy differences between Trump and most senior Republicans is his apparent lack of suspiciousness of Russian activity in Ukraine, to the extent that his knowledge of the Ukraine conflict itself became the subject of much speculation after an interview with ABC last weekend. During the interview, he said Putin was “not going into Ukraine,” and then was reminded that Russia had already annexed Crimea, Trump gave a confused response, noting that Putin was “there in a certain way” and said he would “take a look” at recognizing Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
It is unclear if this is a genuine possibility or a tactic of dodging the question, as he has given the same answer regarding numerous other issues, such as suing rival Ted Cruz, increasing the minimum wage, the international climate change agreement and adopting renewable fuel standards. Notably, the Republicans have dropped their demand for supplying Ukraine with lethal aid since Trump became the party's nominee, which Trump insists was not his doing. He has also said he would look at suspending sanctions on Russia, but it is unclear under what conditions.
Working With Russia in Syria
Clinton: A strong advocate for military intervention and regime change in the past, Clinton faced much criticism from her Democratic rival Bernie Sanders for seeking to take action in Syria after past interventions in Libya and Iraq. She has issued strong statements against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a Russian ally, calling his removal a “number one priority,” but she has also ruled out a large-scale U.S. troop deployment to do it. She has opened the door to working with Russia to bomb the militant group Islamic State (ISIS), but stressed that a joint effort to do so would require that Russia stop attacking other groups on the ground that are fighting both ISIS and Assad, and that Turkey do the same with Kurdish forces fighting ISIS.
“There is an important role for Russia to help in resolving the conflict in Syria,” Clinton has said, though she ruled out a transition government with Assad in charge and warned Russia and Iran that “continuing to prop up a vicious dictator will not bring stability.” She is in favor of introducing a no-fly zone, which would apply to Russia as well, to provide safe passage for refugees, and of pressing Moscow to have Assad scale back his control. She has also spoken favorably of incumbent Secretary of State John Kerry’s attempts to speak to Russia and other parties in the conflict.
Trump: He has issued more sweeping statements, though often rhetorical, saying he wants to “get along” with Russia in Syria. What is more, despite repeated instances of Russia hitting opposition groups in Syria, Trump has stressed his confidence that Russia is committed to fighting ISIS and says the U.S. should trust it to do so alone.
“Russia wants to get rid of ISIS. We want to get rid of ISIS,” he told CBS last year. “Maybe let Russia do it. Let 'em get rid of ISIS. What the hell do we care?”
He also told ABC that he would like to "sit back and...see what happens" with Russian airstrikes in Syria.
At the same time, Trump has backed the idea of ISIS toppling Assad, before the U.S. intervenes to fight ISIS. “Why aren't we letting ISIS go and fight Assad and then we pick up the remnants? Why aren't we doing this? We're fighting ISIS and Assad has to be saying to himself, 'They have the nicest or dumbest people that I've ever imagined,'" he told CBS. Last month, however, he stated that it would be “nice if we got together with Russia and knocked the hell out of ISIS,” though he did not say in what capacity.

You know who I am. I don’t need to tell you. That’s the point. Everyone knows. That schmuck Schwartz, I made him a pile of money, didn’t have a cent before, and he thinks he wrote my book, but he couldn’t have written it without me. That’s O.K., but honestly he doesn’t even write good.
Never had a problem with the press. They don’t get it. I’ve crashed the system. I’m using the press, every one of them! Schwartz did have one phrase I really loved in my book. He said “I play to people’s fantasies” by using “truthful hyperbole.” What he meant is I make stuff up.
Sure. Nobody cares. They want to dream. They want a spectacle. They want gold and towers. They want me to get tough. Fact-checkers! Is that even a job?
By the way, Schwartz was surprised I asked him to write my book. He’d written a negative cover story about me for New York Magazine in 1985. Give me a break! I was on the cover. That’s all that matters. The surface. I stuck the cover up in my office.
You know who I am. Of course you do. You can’t get enough of me. The press has given me a couple of billion dollars in free publicity. Honestly. That’s a good deal. People can’t do without me. You seen the ratings for CNN when it’s about me?
Take that baby the other day. In Virginia, I think. The baby was crying and I said, don’t worry, I love babies. Then I turned on the mom: “Actually I was only kidding. You can get that baby out of here.”
Show authority. Keep people on their toes. Bully them a little. Contradict yourself. Remind them you can get nasty. “You’re fired!” Terrific line.
Keep your options open. Always. Consistency is dull. You think I got to be one of the richest guys in the country by being consistent?
The media loved it. Look, he even hates babies! Nobody hates babies. Same way he hates Muslims and Mexicans! Big story everywhere. Just as the story of the Muslim dad with his quiet wife who wants to teach me the Constitution began to fade. Perfect timing, really.
All the press that hates me, Washington Post, New York Times, full of me. Twitter, too. The whole world! Honestly, sometimes it makes me laugh. Especially when they say he’s gone too far now, he’s peaked! I love that. I tell you, can’t remember how many times I’ve “peaked” — and usually in a story on Page One.
By the way, you may be wondering why I’m writing this diary. I don’t read books. Don’t have time. I don’t like planning or consultants. Or reflection. It’s all gut with me. But I figure some day people may wonder how I got to be president of the United States.
That’s easy. I know what Americans want. They don’t want truth. They want excitement, disruption. They want to be led. They want authority. They want victories. They want parades. They want a wall at the Mexican border — so let them think I really might build one! You think they’re happy with Obama’s managed decline? Give me a break!
All I have to do in the next 96 days is make Hillary seem dull. You know, yesterday’s news. Used goods. Rigged, crooked establishment. Americans want change. She’s more of the same.
And, honestly, she’s no more honest than I am! Truth is over. Attention spans are over — and I never had one anyway. That’s what the press doesn’t get.
That Schwartz, he was a journalist when I proposed the book. He did get one thing right. My book says: “I like thinking big. I always have. To me it’s very simple: If you’re going to be thinking anyway, you might as well think big.”
That last line sounds familiar. Maybe my daughter Ivanka borrowed it in Cleveland. But it came from my book, which, in truthful hyperbole, I wrote.
Thinking big! We’ve been way too predictable. What’s wrong with having Denmark or even China think that if they insult me they might wake and find they’ve been nuked? You’ve got to maximize flexibility. And all the freeloaders out there who’ve gotten used to us not using our leverage, they are going to have to think again. Personally, if Putin eats Estonia, I’m not going to lose sleep over it. But I’m not going public with that yet.

Insiders to Trump: Drop out

Amid widespread chatter that Donald Trump could drop out of the presidential race before Election Day, Republican insiders in key battleground states have a message for The Donald: Get out.
That’s according to The POLITICO Caucus — a panel of activists, strategists and operatives in 11 swing states. The majority of GOP insiders, 70 percent, said they want Trump to drop out of the race and be replaced by another Republican candidate — with many citing Trump’s drag on Republicans in down-ballot races. But those insiders still think it’s a long-shot Trump would actually end his campaign and be replaced by another GOP candidate.

“I’d rather take our chances with nearly anyone else than continue with this certain loser who will likely cost the Senate and much more,” said a New Hampshire Republican — who, like all respondents, completed the survey anonymously.
“The effect Trump is having on down-ballot races has the potential to be devastating in November,” added a Florida Republican. “His negative image among Hispanics, women and independents is something that could be devastating to Republicans. Trump’s divisive rhetoric to the Hispanic community at large has the potential to be devastating for years to come.”
Trump has given no indication that he’s considering quitting, and his campaign insists his perseverance is one of his best attributes. But two network reports recently suggested senior GOP leaders were eyeing how that process would work, just in case.
A Trump exit from the race after he’s been formally nominated would trigger a rarely used vacancy rule in the national Republican Party’s rulebook. That rule empowers the Republican National Committee — a 168-member panel that includes three GOP leaders from every state and territory — to select a replacement. The RNC is also authorized to reconvene the national convention, which would be all but logistically impossible.
The RNC is extremely sensitive to any suggestion that it — the party establishment — is attempting to supplant the will of grass-roots Republicans, so invoking this process is already fraught with peril. But if the RNC’s 168 members convened to pick a substitute candidate, each state’s votes would be weighted based on the size of their delegation to last month’s convention.
In this scenario, Republicans would likely struggle to find a consensus nominee, but immediate options would include Sen. Ted Cruz (the runner-up in the GOP primary), Trump running mate Mike Pence and House Speaker Paul Ryan.
Insiders suggested a handful of replacement candidates: A Florida Republican said Ryan “is the only one who can unite the party,” while multiple others plugged Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
But just because GOP insiders want Trump out of the race doesn’t mean they think he will oblige them. Asked about the possibility, a 58 percent majority think it’s certain Trump will stay in through Election Day, including many who want him out of the race. Two insiders compared the odds of Trump dropping out to them winning the Powerball drawing — two extremely unlikely events with relative equal desirability.
“I also wish I could lose 20 pounds, cut 5 shots off my handicap and play the piano,” a New Hampshire Republican added. “None of those things will happen, and neither will Trump drop out.”
“Here is the quandary I find myself in,” an Ohio Republican said. “While I would love for Trump to drop out and anyone else to take the mantle, that kind of talk will only harden his supporters. We cannot let them think we stole this from them. There has never been a better example of ‘damned if you do, damned if you don't.’”
A number of insiders cited Trump’s ego as proof he won’t slink away from the campaign before voters have their say.
“He is an egomaniac,” a Colorado Republican said. “There is no chance he would voluntarily exit the race.”
“He’s not going anywhere. His ego wouldn’t allow it,” a Virginia Republican added. “He'll dominate the news for the next three months, each day more painful than the last, finally lose, say it was rigged and get a new [television] show.”
Democrats mostly agreed Trump would see his campaign through to the end. A similar percentage, 55 percent, expressed confidence Trump would stay in the race, while 45 percent said it was possible he could drop out.
“Not for a second do I believe that to be a possibility,” said a New Hampshire Democrat. “His ego is way too big for that. It is also too big to entertain the possibility of a loss. Thus, we see this week the beginning of a very vocal narrative about the ‘rigged’ system that may cost him the election. If he loses, and I believe he will, God help us all because Trump and his minions will foment an uprising of epic proportions.”
A handful of insiders said they wanted Trump to stay in, but not because they believe in his ability to win or capability to serve as president. If Trump stays in and loses, they said, it could help the party heal itself after the election.
“Trump won the nomination,” a Michigan Republican said. “He should lose fair and square. Only then will the party base have to reckon with what they've done.”
“I want Trump to feel the blame for this loss,” added an Iowa Republican, “not put it on the doorstep of ‘the Establishment.’”
The Iowa Republican predicted that rumors of a Trump exit are likely only to get louder: “Talk of Trump dropping out will reach a fevered pitch next week, when his poll numbers bottom out,” the Republican said. “We need to brace ourselves.”

Donald Trump's running mate Mike Pence vowed that a Trump-Pence administration would stand up to 'Russian aggression' – in just the latest rhetoric that parts ways with his boss.
Pence, appearing at the Indiana state fair in Indianapolis along with his wife Karen, got asked about Russia on the Today Show after a tough op-ed in the New York Times by former CIA director Michael Morell.
The article charged that Trump would be a 'poor, even dangerous, commander in chief,' and added about his long-distance relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin: 'In the intelligence business, we would say that Mr. Putin had recruited Mr. Trump as an unwitting agent of the Russian Federation.'
Pence countered Friday: 'People that know Donald Trump know that he knows how to stand up and he knows how to stand strong, and standing up to Russian aggression is going to be really different under a Trump Pence administration and everybody knows that.'

He added: 'The reality is that whether it be Putin or whether it be literally the dissolving of the map in the wider Middle East … the American people know weakness arouses evil is on full display in this administration. Donald Trump is going to be strong,' he said.
He pushed back in at Morell and the CIA in the interview with host Savannah Guthrie, saying, 'I supposes this is the same CIA that told the president that ISIS was the JV team. I mean, come on Savannah, these people are playing politics. And I get all of that.' He was referencing an early comment by Obama comparing ISIS to a junior varsity squad.
 Trump has come under fire for several comments about Russia during the campaign. He has praised the leadership of Putin, said Putin is 'not going into Ukraine' even though Russia already has, and said he would be 'looking into' recognizing Russia's rule in Crimea, which Russia annexed in a move that prompted international sanctions.
Pence also spoke about the state of the race, after several post-convention shows giving Hillary Clinton a widening lead.

Pence has notably split with Trump on some key political responses. Trump has declined to endorse Speaker Paul Ryan in his primary election, whereas Pence came out for his former House colleague.

The Turkish Coup Attempt, Russia, And The West

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan travels to St. Petersburg on August 9 to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. They will focus on improving cooperation in two main areas: the effort to find a shared and joint solution to the Syria crisis, and in business and energy, including a full resumption of tourism from Russia to Turkey, trade, and construction projects that were halted during a monthslong spat between the two nations.
Both sides, it appears, are using the recent Turkish coup attempt to mend their relations.
This is Erdogan's first visit to a foreign country since the July 15 effort to overthrow his government. The coup attempt was rebuffed by a majority of Turks and clamped down by security forces. It was followed by the detention, arrest, and dismissal of tens of thousands of people accused of being members or sympathizing with Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish preacher who has been in self-imposed exile in the United States since 1999. He is accused by the Turkish government of building a secret network infiltrating the army, the justice, education, and media sectors, and the business world.
The St. Petersburg visit will also be the first meeting between the Turkish and Russian presidents since Turkey downed a Russian attack aircraft near the Syrian-Turkish border in November. Erdogan strongly defended the action at the time, saying that the Russian aircraft -- which was participating in Russia's bombing campaign in Syria -- had violated Turkish airspace.
In the Syrian conflict, Turkey started in the early 2010s to support armed rebel groups, including extremist Islamists, against the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad. Russia took sides with the Assad government and actively entered the war in September, 2015. This created a regional confrontation between Russia and Turkey, who had to that point enjoyed good relations. 
Following the incident, relations between the two countries reached a historic low. Putin called the downing of the Russian aircraft -- which led to the killing of its Russian pilot after he parachuted to the ground in Syria -- a "war crime" and demanded an apology by Erdogan. Russia also initiated a number of punitive measures against Turkey -- including ones preventing Russian tourists from traveling to Turkey, and a ban on Turkish food imports -- that strained Turkey's economy.
Then, in an about-face, Russia announced in June that Erdogan had sent a letter of condolence to Putin over the downing of the Russian jet and the two sides agreed to resolve their issues, find common ground in the effort to end the Syrian crisis, and improve their relations.
Formidable sticking points remain, however, particularly when it comes to Syria and the future of Assad.
Speaking about Erdogan's upcoming visit, Ibrahim Kalin, the spokesman for the Turkish president, said that Turkey wants "to work together with Russia to find a political transition [of power] for Syria, a democratic and pluralist political structure acceptable to all Syrians." However, he added, "such a solution, that is in the interest of both Russia and Turkey, will be not possible with Assad remaining in power."
It seems the resumption of better economic and energy relations is already in progress. The delivery of Russian natural gas to Turkey was never interrupted in the first place, so not much ground was lost. The resumption of Russian tourism to Turkey is trickier, in part due to the deadly terrorist attack against the Istanbul airport in June as well as the recent coup -- both of which badly damaged Turkish tourism during high season. 
Foreign policy seems to be at the top of the upcoming Erdogan-Putin meeting. Obviously, Syria policy is to be a main part of the two leaders' discussions. A "goodwill coordination of positions" on Syria would seem to be a potential rebuff to U.S. efforts in support of armed groups and Kurdish rebels in Syria against Assad, a scenario that would be complicated by Russia's own support for the Kurds.
But Russia also appears to be using two issues related to the recent coup attempt to deepen the current Turkish-U.S. and generally Turkish-Western atmosphere of accusatory distrust, and bring Turkey closer to Russian foreign policy coordinates.
From the beginning of the coup attempt, Turkish officials and media have maintained that the West -- notably the United States, a NATO ally -- has been slow and reluctant in condemning the coup attempt. Erdogan and many other Turkish politicians and media have not shied from public claims that the West, notably the United States, was behind the coup attempt. Secondly, the Turkish government has been insisting on the extradition of Gulen -- who is considered to be a terrorist by Ankara and who Turkey accuses of being the mastermind of the coup attempt -- from the United States to Turkey. Washington, while dismissing accusations that it had any role in the coup attempt, has asked for "concrete evidence of Gulen's personal involvement in the attempt" and said that the government will act on the extradition request based on the final legal assessment -- a process that can take years.
Meanwhile, Moscow is presenting itself to Turkey as a good "friend" who condemned the coup attempt from the beginning and offered Erdogan its full support. Russian lawmakers have claimedthat the "U.S. will never extradite Gulen because the CIA was behind him and his coup attempt," and bombastic politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky went so far as to say that "Gulen and the U.S. are Turkey's enemies." 
Despite Erdogan's initial defense of the downing of the Russian jet, since the coup attempt Turkey has tried to blame the incident on pilots who are alleged to have been Gulen sympathizers. Even more, just on the eve of the Erdogan-Putin meeting, rumor-based "reports" are making waves in Turkish media that the Gulen movement was trying to provoke a "Russian-Turkish war" and that this alleged "CIA-MI6-Mossad plan" was hatched to distance NATO-member Turkey from establishing close relations with Russia. A French newspaper report is frequently quoted as a "reliable Western source," claiming that on the night of the coup attempt "U.S.-supported jet fighters tried to bomb Erdogan's hotel, where he was on vacation, while Putin ordered his Russian jet fighters to defend Erdogan."
It seems that apart from the effort to develop a common Turkish-Russian position on Syria, the meeting will be cause for celebration -- with Erdogan thanking Putin for his support following the failed coup attempt, and Putin assuring the Turkish leader of future Russian support.
Analyst and columnist Kadri Gursel summarized it this way, "In order to frighten the West, Erdogan will show that Turkey is getting increasingly closer to Russia." 
In reality, however, Russia does not have much to offer to Ankara in terms of investment, technology, defense, and trade. Turkey has a deep and interdependent relationship with the West. A Turkey decoupled from the West is bad for NATO and bad for the West, but much worse for Turkey itself.

US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has backtracked on a claim that he saw video footage of a US cash payment to Iran.
He made the claim at a rally. His team admitted it was incorrect, only for Mr Trump to repeat it at another rally.
The money was paid at the same time US hostages were freed, but the president said it was a payment linked to the landmark Iranian nuclear agreement.
Mr Trump said the video he saw was of the hostage transfer, not the payment.
The White House announced in January it was making payments to Iran - a total of $1.7bn (£1.3bn) to settle a decades-old dispute over a failed military equipment deal - as part of the nuclear accord.
A newspaper this week revealed that $400m of that was delivered in cash, flown to Iran at roughly the same time as four Americans were released in a prisoner exchange.
The timing of the transfer brought attacks from Republicans, including Mr Trump.
President Barack Obama denied any connection between the cash and the prisoner swap, saying: "We do not pay ransom for hostages." He said the payment had to be in cash because strict financial sanctions precluded other methods.
However, the BBC's Barbara Plett Usher in Washington says it did not help that Iranian defence officials had described the money as a ransom payment.
Mr Trump insisted on Wednesday he had seen video showing the money being delivered.
His team on Thursday acknowledged this was not the case, saying Mr Trump was referring to cable news file footage of hostages being released.
But Mr Trump repeated his claim at another rally later on Thursday.
On Friday, his tweet was echoing the campaign team, saying: "The plane I saw on television was the hostage plane in Geneva, Switzerland, not the plane carrying $400 million in cash going to Iran!"

'Blank cheque'

Donald Trump has had a difficult week. His rival, Hillary Clinton, has seen a significant opinion poll boost since the Democratic convention.
He has also run into trouble by rowing with the parents of a Muslim US army captain who was killed in Iraq and was criticised for calling Mrs Clinton "the devil".
A number of high-profile figures, including Republicans, have come out against him.
Republican Congressman Mike Coffman was one to air an anti-Trump advertisement.
Former director of the CIA, Michael Morell, not affiliated to either party, said in the New York Timesthat he would "do everything I can to ensure [Mrs Clinton] is elected our 45th president".

On Thursday, Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan told fundraisers the party had to protect its majority in Congress or "we could be handing President Hillary Clinton a blank cheque".
It echoed the "Let's not give Clinton a blank cheque" phrase used by Republicans in 1996 when it became clear Bob Dole would not defeat Bill Clinton.
However, Mr Trump's running mate, Mike Pence, stood firmly behind him on Friday, telling NBC: "Donald Trump and I are standing shoulder to shoulder to say to the American people, 'we can be strong again'."

For Putin, Disinformation Is Power

Over the past decade, this narrative of defeat and humiliation has become a stalwart of Mr. Putin’s ideology of resurgence. If America won the Cold War, it must be responsible for the Soviet breakup and the impoverishment of millions of Russians. And if Russia was defeated, it could only be expected to one day seek revenge.
This narrative has become extremely popular in Russia. Anti-Americanism offers Russians a familiar outlet for their frustration and sense of impotence in the face of their own corrupt and oppressive regime. It gives Mr. Putin an ideological cover for his kleptocratic system of governance led by current and former security servicemen. To sustain this narrative, the Kremlin’s state-controlled media has excelled at reconstructing the centuries-old image of Russia as a besieged fortress.
Today, Mr. Putin presents Russia’s actions as responsive, not aggressive. Every time Russia attacks a former Soviet republic, the confrontation is portrayed as a proxy war started by America against Russia. When Russia attacked Georgia in 2008, the United States was in the midst of a presidential election that the incumbent Republican Party would soon lose, so the war was followed the next year not by tough sanctions against Russia but with a “reset” initiated by the new Democratic president, Barack Obama, and his secretary of state, Hillary Clinton.
That, too, proved a misstep. The idea was that two new presidents — Mr. Obama and Dmitri A. Medvedev, who had recently taken Mr. Putin’s place in the Kremlin — could put the past behind them. But Mr. Medvedev, who oversaw the war in Georgia, was only a place-holder appointed by Mr. Putin to circumvent a constitutional term limit. Policy makers in Washington and in Berlin knew this but decided to build up Mr. Medvedev, hoping to split Russia’s elites. Instead, Russia got away with the Georgia war cost-free, which ultimately contributed to Russian confidence that its later incursions into Ukraine would succeed.
Mr. Medvedev’s presidency ended with mass demonstrations in Moscow and other cities in the winter of 2011-12, with tens of thousands protesting Mr. Putin’s return to the presidency and demanding modernization of the state. At the time, Mr. Putin accused Mrs. Clinton of taking “active measures” to spur protesters on. “She set the tone for some actors in our country and gave them a signal,” he said. “They heard the signal and with the support of the U.S. State Department began active work.”
Now Mr. Putin, who is known to bear grudges, appears to be disrupting Mrs. Clinton’s own presidential campaign with “active measures.” That the disclosures of the Democratic National Committee emails could benefit only Donald Trump is probably an added bonus. Mr. Trump’s main appeal within the Kremlin is not that he admires Mr. Putin, but that he has little interest in Russia’s sphere of influence. And Mr. Putin has long dreamed of a new Yalta-style agreement to let Russia and America divide Europe again.
To be sure, Russia’s ability to influence American elections is limited. Mr. Putin does not control the American media, and Russia lacks the financial and military resources that the Soviet Union had. Still, the effort points to a danger. An angry and declining Russia is far more perilous than an ascending economic power like China. Sanctions won’t change Mr. Putin’s behavior: He rates the security of his regime far above the economic good of the country.
Mr. Putin has reason to fear in one respect. His system does face an existential threat from the Western model of governance. Just as the economic inadequacies of Soviet Communism were exposed by comparison with the wealth produced by Western capitalism, Mr. Putin’s authoritarianism cannot match the appeal of an economy based on the rule of law, openness and competition. The best way for the West to resist Russia, now as then, is to uphold its own values.
“Russia, as opposed to the Western world in general, is still by far the weaker party and may well contain deficiencies which will eventually weaken its own total potential.” So wrote the master diplomat George F. Kennan in 1947. We know now that Kennan was right. The bad news is that it took 44 years for his prophecy to come true.

No Right Turn - The New York Times

All the experts tell us not to pay too much attention to polls for another week or two. Still, it does look as if Hillary Clinton got a big bounce from her convention, swamping her opponent’s bounce a week earlier. Better still, from the Democrats’ point of view, the swing in the polls appears to be doing what some of us thought it might: sending Donald Trump into a derp spiral, in which his ugly nonsense gets even uglier and more nonsensical as his electoral prospects sink.
As a result, we’re finally seeing some prominent Republicans not just refusing to endorse Mr. Trump, but actually declaring their support for Mrs. Clinton. So how should she respond?
The obvious answer, you might think, is that she should keep doing what she is doing — emphasizing how unfit her rival is for office, letting her allies point out her own qualifications and continuing to advocate a moderately center-left policy agenda that is largely a continuation of President Obama’s.
But at least some commentators are calling on her to do something very different — to make a right turn, moving the Democratic agenda toward the preferences of those fleeing the sinking Republican ship. The idea, I guess, is to offer to create an American version of a European-style grand coalition of the center-left and the center-right.
I don’t think there’s much prospect that Mrs. Clinton will actually do that. But if by any chance she and those around her are tempted to take this recommendation seriously: Don’t.
First of all, let’s be clear about what she’s running on. It’s an unabashedly progressive program, but hardly extreme. We’re talking about higher taxes on high incomes, but nowhere near as high as those taxes were for a generation after World War II; expanded social programs, but nothing close to those of European welfare states; stronger financial regulation and more action on climate change, but aren’t the cases for both overwhelming?
And no, the program doesn’t need to be more “pro-growth.”
There’s absolutely no evidence that tax cuts for the rich and radical deregulation, which is what right-wingers mean when they talk about pro-growth policies, actually work, or that strengthening the social safety net does any harm. Bill Clinton presided over a bigger boom than Ronald Reagan; the Obama years have seen much more private job creation than the Bush era, even before the crash, with job growth actually accelerating after taxes went up and Obamacare went into effect.
It’s true that there are things we could do to boost the U.S. economy. The most important of these things, however, would be to take advantage of very low government borrowing costs to greatly expand public investment — which is something progressives support but conservatives oppose. So enough already with the notion that being on the center-left somehow means being anti-growth.
Now let’s talk about the politics.
The Trumpification of the G.O.P. didn’t come out of nowhere. On the contrary, it was the natural outcome of a cynical strategy: long ago, conservatives decided to harness racial resentment to sell right-wing economic policies to working-class whites, especially in the South.
This strategy brought many electoral victories, but always at the risk that the racial resentment would run out of control, leaving the economic conservatives — whose ideas never had much popular support — stranded. And that is what has just happened.
So now the strategy that rightists had used to sell policies that were neither popular nor successful has blown up in their faces. And the Democratic response should be to adopt some of those policies? Say what?
Also, I can’t help but notice a curious pattern in the recommendations of some self-proclaimed centrists. When Republicans were in the ascendant, centrists urged Democrats to adapt by moving right. Now that Republicans are in trouble, with some feeling that they have no choice except to vote Democratic, these same centrists are urging Democrats to … adapt by moving right. Funny how that works.
Back to the main theme: Grand coalitions do sometimes have a place in politics, as a response to crises that are neither party’s fault — external threats to national security, economic disaster. But that’s not what is happening here. Trumpism is basically a creation of the modern conservative movement, which used coded appeals to prejudice to make political gains, then found itself unable to rein in a candidate who skipped the coding.
If some conservatives find this too much and bolt the party, good for them, and they should be welcomed into the coalition of the sane. But they can’t expect policy concessions in return. When Dr. Frankenstein finally realizes that he has created a monster, he doesn’t get a reward. Mrs. Clinton and her party should stay the course.

I Ran the C.I.A. Now I’m Endorsing Hillary Clinton.

During a 33-year career at the Central Intelligence Agency, I served presidents of both parties — three Republicans and three Democrats. I was at President George W. Bush’s side when we were attacked on Sept. 11; as deputy director of the agency, I was with President Obama when we killed Osama bin Laden in 2011.
I am neither a registered Democrat nor a registered Republican. In my 40 years of voting, I have pulled the lever for candidates of both parties. As a government official, I have always been silent about my preference for president.
No longer. On Nov. 8, I will vote for Hillary Clinton. Between now and then, I will do everything I can to ensure that she is elected as our 45th president.
Two strongly held beliefs have brought me to this decision. First, Mrs. Clinton is highly qualified to be commander in chief. I trust she will deliver on the most important duty of a president — keeping our nation safe. Second, Donald J. Trump is not only unqualified for the job, but he may well pose a threat to our national security.
I spent four years working with Mrs. Clinton when she was secretary of state, most often in the White House Situation Room. In these critically important meetings, I found her to be prepared, detail-oriented, thoughtful, inquisitive and willing to change her mind if presented with a compelling argument.
I also saw the secretary’s commitment to our nation’s security; her belief that America is an exceptional nation that must lead in the world for the country to remain secure and prosperous; her understanding that diplomacy can be effective only if the country is perceived as willing and able to use force if necessary; and, most important, her capacity to make the most difficult decision of all — whether to put young American women and men in harm’s way.
Mrs. Clinton was an early advocate of the raid that brought Bin Laden to justice, in opposition to some of her most important colleagues on the National Security Council. During the early debates about how we should respond to the Syrian civil war, she was a strong proponent of a more aggressive approach, one that might have prevented the Islamic State from gaining a foothold in Syria.
I never saw her bring politics into the Situation Room. In fact, I saw the opposite. When some wanted to delay the Bin Laden raid by one day because the White House Correspondents Dinner might be disrupted, she said, “Screw the White House Correspondents Dinner.”
In sharp contrast to Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Trump has no experience on national security. Even more important, the character traits he has exhibited during the primary season suggest he would be a poor, even dangerous, commander in chief.
These traits include his obvious need for self-aggrandizement, his overreaction to perceived slights, his tendency to make decisions based on intuition, his refusal to change his views based on new information, his routine carelessness with the facts, his unwillingness to listen to others and his lack of respect for the rule of law.
The dangers that flow from Mr. Trump’s character are not just risks that would emerge if he became president. It is already damaging our national security.
President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia was a career intelligence officer, trained to identify vulnerabilities in an individual and to exploit them. That is exactly what he did early in the primaries. Mr. Putin played upon Mr. Trump’s vulnerabilities by complimenting him. He responded just as Mr. Putin had calculated.
Mr. Putin is a great leader, Mr. Trump says, ignoring that he has killed and jailed journalists and political opponents, has invaded two of his neighbors and is driving his economy to ruin. Mr. Trump has also taken policy positions consistent with Russian, not American, interests — endorsing Russian espionage against the United States, supporting Russia’s annexation of Crimea and giving a green light to a possible Russian invasion of the Baltic States.
In the intelligence business, we would say that Mr. Putin had recruited Mr. Trump as an unwitting agent of the Russian Federation.
Mr. Trump has also undermined security with his call for barring Muslims from entering the country. This position, which so clearly contradicts the foundational values of our nation, plays into the hands of the jihadist narrative that our fight against terrorism is a war between religions.
In fact, many Muslim Americans play critical roles in protecting our country, including the man, whom I cannot identify, who ran the C.I.A.’s Counterterrorism Center for nearly a decade and who I believe is most responsible for keeping America safe since the Sept. 11 attacks.
My training as an intelligence officer taught me to call it as I see it. This is what I did for the C.I.A. This is what I am doing now. Our nation will be much safer with Hillary Clinton as president.
