Knights Templar - Wikipedia

The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (LatinPauperes commilitones Christi Templique Salomonici), also known as the Order of Solomon's Temple (FrenchOrdre du Temple or Templiers), the Knights Templar, or simply as Templars, was a Catholic military order recognised in 1139 by papal bull Omne Datum Optimum of the Holy See.[4] The order was active from about 1129[citation needed] to 1312.
The order, which was among the wealthiest and most powerful, became a favoured charity throughout Christendom and grew rapidly in membership and power. They were prominent in Christian finance. Templar knights, in their distinctive white mantles with a red cross, were among the most skilled fighting units of the Crusades.[5] Non-combatant members of the order managed a large economic infrastructure throughout Christendom,[6] developing innovative financial techniques that were an early form of banking,[7][8] and building fortifications across Europe and the Holy Land.
The Templars were closely tied to the Crusades; when the Holy Land was lost, support for the order faded. Rumours about the Templars' secret initiation ceremony created distrust, and King Philip IV of France – deeply in debt to the order – took advantage of the situation to gain control over them. In 1307 he had many of the order's members in France arrested, tortured into giving false confessions, and burned at the stake.[9] Pope Clement V disbanded the order in 1312 under pressure from King Philip.
The abrupt reduction in power of a significant group in European society gave rise to speculation, legend, and legacy through the ages. The re-use of their name for later organizations has kept the name "Templar" alive to the modern day.

The U.S. and Global Security Review: Mezzeh airport attack, Israel, and the situation in Syria

The U.S. and Israel are in possession of the newly developed space based laser weapons, which make the nuclear weapons obsolete: any missile carrying them will be struck with lasers, producing the nuclear explosions on the aggressor's own territory, thus punishing them for their aggression.

Syrian General: Operations in Damascus First Likely Response to Israeli Aggression

TEHRAN - A senior Syrian General underlined that Syria will intensify operations against the Israeli-affiliated terrorist groups in Western Ghouta of Damascus as the first likely response to Tel Aviv's recent attack.
"Syria's first response to the Israeli aggression will be suppression of the dangerous terrorists affiliated to the Israeli regime in Beit Jen in the Western countryside of Damascus," Brigadier General Rajab Deeb said on Sunday.
He categorically dismissed rumors that Israel has targeted a cargo of the Iranian missiles as incorrect, and said Tel Aviv's silence on its new aggression against al-Mezzeh airbase and its results indicates that the regime has not attained its desired objective.
Noting that there is no need for Syria's direct response to the attack, Deeb said that the Syrian army will intensify its operations against the terrorists in an important region whose consequences will affect the Zionist regime, but he did not provide any further detail.
Syrian sources confirmed on Friday that Israel had launched an attack on a military airport near Damascus.
Syrian State TV said that al-Mezzeh military air facility was struck several times near the Syrian capital of Damascus.
Israeli rockets took aim at an ammunition depot, producing an enormous explosion, according to the state TV.
The airport is a major strategic asset used by Syrian elites, military officials and troops as a transit complex.
The Syrian government also used the airport as a military outpost to launch artillery shells at former terrorist-held areas in the suburbs of Damascus.
Following the attacks, a Syrian army spokesman warned that Israel would face repercussions of the "flagrant" attack on the al-Mezzeh military airport.
A spokesman was also quoted on the state TV as saying that the projectiles originated near Lake Tiberias in Northern Israel just after midnight.

Huge explosions could be seen above the buildings of Damascus
The Syrian army said that Israel has launched a missile strike on the al-Mazzeh military airport west of Damascus early on Friday morning. The army said it was a “flagrant attack” by Israel with the purpose of aiding the “terrorist groups” in Syria. According to the army statement:
Syrian army command and armed forces warn Israel of the repercussions of the flagrant attack and stresses its continued fight against (this) terrorism and amputate the arms of the perpetrators.
Syrian state television quoted the army as saying several rockets were fired from an area near Lake Tiberias in northern Israel just after midnight. The report said that the rockets landed in the military compound of the airbase, causing explosions and a large fire. Other reports were contradictory, saying that the Israeli attack was from missiles launched from Israeli warplanes.
Syria says that there have been several such attacks in the past, and that they all coincided with defeats for the armed terrorist groups in Syria, especially Jabhat al-Nusra (al-Nusra Front), which recently changed its name to Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (JFS, Front for the Conquest of Syria). Syria said that the purpose of the attack was to “raise morale” of the terrorist organizations who are attempting to overthrow the regime of Syria’s president Bashar al-Assad.
Syria has sent letters to the United Nations demanding international retaliation against Israel:
The new Israeli missile attack on Mazzeh military airport west of Damascus comes within a long series of Israeli attacks since the beginning of the terrorist war on the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Syria which has been planned in the Israeli, French and British intelligence agencies and their agents in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar and other countries that wanted to impose control and hegemony on Syria and the region.
Iran’s media added to the charges by claiming that Israel was attempting to prevent Syria’s army from restoring water supplies to Damascus. SANA (Syria) and Jerusalem Post and Press TV (Tehran)

Israel’s motive was probably to prevent weapons from reaching Hezbollah

As is their usual practice, Israel has neither confirmed nor denied that the attack took place. Some analysts are saying that the large explosions occurred because the target of the attacks was several large weapons stores. Syria’s army was using to those weapons to attack rebels in Syria, but it is possible that Israel believed that some of those weapons were to be transferred to Lebanon’s Iran-backed terrorist group Hezbollah.
Israel and Hezbollah fought a war in 2006 that largely ended in stalemate. However, it is known that Iran has been supplying rockets and other weapons to Hezbollah in preparation for the next war. Israel has taken steps where possible to prevent other weapons from reaching Hezbollah. Missiles and chemical weapons from Syria are particular concerns.
In statements to Israel’s parliament (Knesset) in December, Israel’s Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman described Israel’s policy in Syria:
Israel has no interest in intervening in the civil war in Syria. Our policies and our positions are very clear and are based on three red lines: we will not allow any harm to come to Israeli citizens, we will not allow any harm to the sovereignty of the State of Israel and we will not allow the smuggling of sophisticated weapons or chemical weapons from Syria to Lebanon for Hezbollah.
Hezbollah’s major arms supply route between Damascus and Lebanon’s border has been targeted on several occasions in recent years by Israeli air strikes. This has included strikes on warehouses and convoys of weapons. Reuters and Israel National News and Middle East Monitor

Morning Star :: Israel attack on Damascus air base follows suicide bomb

ISRAEL attacked an air base on the outskirts of Damascus yesterday — mere miles from the site of a suicide bombing hours earlier.
Syrian military sources told the Sana news agency that missiles launched from the Sea of Galilee area struck the Mezzeh air base west of the capital, setting off explosions in an ammunition dump.
The sources claimed the latest Israeli attack was in support of foreign-backed insurgents “to raise their morale.”
“The army command and armed forces warn Israel of repercussions for flagrant attacks on our soil,” the Armed Forces General Command said.
No casualties were reported.
In a letter of protest to UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres, the Foreign Ministry said it was just the latest in “a long series of Israeli attacks since the beginning of the terrorist war on the sovereignty, territorial integrity and Syria’s independence.
It alleged the attack was planned by “the Israeli, French and British intelligence agencies and their agents in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar and other countries that wanted to impose control and hegemony on Syria and the region.”
Earlier a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a sports club in Damascus, two miles east of the air base, killing eight people and wounding others.
But in a major breakthrough, Syrian TV reported that technicians had entered the village of Ayn al Fijah in the Barada valley — where
people have been denied drinking water for three weeks — to repair water treatment works at the spring there under a deal with occupying insurgents.
On Thursday troops drove the militants from the nearby village of Basimah.
The al-Qaida-affiliated Levant Conquest Front (LCF) poisoned the water supply with diesel fuel on December 22, then blew up the works just before New Year.
Turkey and the Western-backed Ahrar as-Sham faction — an LCF ally that has rejected the Russia-Turkey brokered ceasefire — have accused the government of breaking the ceasefire in its efforts to end the crisis.
In Geneva on Thursday night, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the US “should be definitely invited” to the January 23 peace talks in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana — three days after the inauguration of president-elect Donald Trump.
The outgoing Obama government was left out of the ceasefire talks.

(AhlulBayt News Agency) - "The recent aggression by the Zionist regime against Syria was the result of the recent victories by the army and the resistance front in Aleppo, Qalamoun and Damascus province as well as isolation of Saudi Arabia and Israel on the threshold of the Astana talks," Mohammad Nasour said on Saturday.
"Israel's aggression and violation of Syria's sovereignty was done as we approach a political solution to the crisis in Syria which is the result of the Damascus and its allies' important achievements in the battle ground and at the political levels," he added.
Nasour warned that Israel is seeking to intensify violence and bloodshed in the region.

Analysis: What does Russia really think about Israel's alleged airstrikes in Syria? - Arab-Israeli Conflict

One cannot ignore or underestimate the warnings of the Syrian Government and its army's capability to respond to Thursday night's attack, which Syria attributed to Israel. The spokesperson for the Syrian Army claimed that Israeli planes flying near the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) in northern Israel attacked the Mezzah military airport, located near Damascus, with missiles. The airport is approximately five kilometers from Basher Assad’s presidential palace. Opposition leaders claim that there were more targets in addition to the airport.
This is not the first time that the Syrian Army and Assad's government have blamed Israel for attacks in Syrian territory, threatening retaliation. Until now, the threats have been just that, threats.

It is clear that Assad does not want to open a new front with Israel. Just recently, with the help of Russian fighter jets, Hezbollah forces alongside Iranian Shi’ite ground forces and the Syrian army were able to defeat rebel forces and regain territory. These successes raised the Syrian army's morale, upping their confidence. In their next conflict or the one after, Syrian leadership may develop "Crying Wolf" syndrome. Strike after strike and in the end, Assad may decide to respond.
Another possibility is for Assad to use a proxy to attack, using Palestinians or Hezbollah on the Golan Heights border in order to rattle Israel. This is something that already happened two years ago when Iranian forces, together with Hezbollah, Palestinians and Pro-Syrian Druze created cells which attacked Israeli posts in the Golan Heights.
According to foreign reports, Israel managed to squash the cells by assassination, which included Jihad Mughniyah, whose father, Imad Mughniyah (Hezbollah’s “defense minister”), was assassinated in a joint Mossad and CIA operation in 2008. Druze terrorist Samir Kontar was also killed.
The Israeli security establishment does not belittle threats from Syria, taking into account a reaction from Damascus, though the probability of an attack is currently low.
According to foreign reports, Israel has attacked Syria ten to fifteen times in recent years, eliminating sophisticated weaponry such as air defense systems, navigation and guided systems as well as long-distance missiles -- all of which were supplied from Iran and Syria to Hezbollah.
However, what is especially interesting is Russia's silence. A spokesperson for the Russian Defense Ministry has in the past warned the United States and coalition forces not to attack the Syrian Regime. Russia has remained silent on the alleged Israeli attack.
(Netanyahu to discuss with Putin closer military coordination)
If Russia, Assad's biggest supporter, was against Israeli attacks and warned against them, it would have limited Israel’s freedom of action.
This leads us to believe that there is probably a quiet understanding between Jerusalem and Moscow. Beyond “de-conflicting,” or preventing the two militaries from shooting at each other, the full nature of the agreement remains unknown.
The deal was reached in meetings between Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and IAF commander Maj.-Gen. Amir Eshel alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and his military chiefs. It seems as though Israel enjoys freedom of movement in firing missiles into Syria.
It is possible to conclude that Russia understands that Israel's interests are solely to prevent arms transfers of sophisticated weapons from reaching Hezbollah. They also know Israel’s red line. Israel has no interest in entering Syria's civil war, not by supporting the rebels or by acting against the regime.
As long as Russia will continue to accept these principles, Israel will allegedly continue to act from time to time, with proper accurate intelligence.

USIP’s Work

Whatever the military outcome of the war or Syria’s future governance, achieving a peaceful Syria will require reconciliation among the communal groups that are fighting the country’s underlying, often local, conflicts. The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) works in Syria, and in neighboring countries where Syrians have taken refuge, to strengthen Syrians’ efforts to overcome these communal conflicts. It has piloted dialogues among opposed tribal or sectarian groups. USIP works with Syrian civil society organizations to strengthen them for long-term efforts to resolve conflicts and advocate for better governance in their country following generations of authoritarian rule. USIP’s work on Syria includes:
Engaging Community Leaders to Promote Social Cohesion. USIP gathers religious, tribal and civic leaders to solve problems facing their communities—an effort that reduces tensions that could lead to violence. In 2015, USIP organized such a project in al-Qahtaniyah, a locality of northeast Syria divided among ethnic Kurds and Arabs, plus Sunni Muslims, Christians, Yazidis and other groups. USIP gathered local leaders from these groups at Erbil in neighboring Iraq, where they agreed to cooperate in opening a vital local road and in returning displaced families to their homes. Through this dialogue and workshop, the leaders built skills in conflict prevention and managing relationships. The al-Qahtaniyah process offers a model that can be scaled up nationwide to lay foundations for a more peaceful Syria. USIP also provides training and mentoring for two communities (in areas beyond government control) to help local councils, civil society organizations and activist networks resolve and manage community conflicts and improve governance.
Building Relations Among Religious Leaders. Throughout the Syrian civil war, USIP has supported initiatives for dialogue across sectarian divides, understanding that religious leaders help shape their constituencies’ lasting narratives of the multi-faceted conflict. They can help build peace—or spur conflict. And faith leaders have the credibility to counter extremist interpretations of religion. USIP convened conferences of Syrian faith leaders in 2014 and 2015 to explore ways that they can promote a peaceful future for Syria, and to prepare their next steps for doing so.
Reducing Tensions Between Refugees and Host Communities. In countries neighboring Syria, USIP works to reduce rising frictions between refugee populations and their host communities. This effort will counter extremists’ efforts to radicalize Syrian refugee children and youth—a risk that is a concern of the host countries. USIP’s work also will encourage the building of positive relationships between refugee and host communities.
Dialogue for a Future Democratic Transition. In 2012, USIP helped convene dozens of Syrian political and local community activists, in a project called The Day After, to develop a shared vision for a democratic future for Syria. The dialogue included guidance from international experts on economic and social reforms, strengthening the rule of law, constitution-making, and other elements of political transitions. USIP encourages the continuation and broadening of such dialogues, which can build a basis for a more peaceful, democratic future.

USIP Publications

Institute staff and experts publish in-depth PeaceWorks reports, timely Policy Briefs and other articles that distill expert research, lessons learned and problem-solving solutions to advance peacebuilding. Recent publications on Syria include:

USIP Events

USIP hosts conferences, panel discussions, off-record roundtables and other events that gather policymakers, elected officials, scholars and others to discuss peacebuilding and analyze its challenges. Events on Syria include those below.
ISIS and Sex Slavery: How to Move From Condemnation to Action. The world has condemned ISIS’ brutality against women, but has done little to act against it. USIP hosted experts, including Zainab Bangura, the United Nations’ chief campaigner against sexual violence, to frame a strategy for action.
Middle East Strategy Task Force: Beyond Refugees. The 12 million-plus Syrians uprooted from their homes are driving the flood of refugees into Europe. Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley led a discussion in September 2015 of how the United States and its partners should respond to the greatest displacement of people since World War II. They were joined by former British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, USIP President Nancy Lindborg and others.
Film Screening: Syria’s “Red Lines”. USIP hosted a screening of “Red Lines,” the story of two young, unlikely Syrian activists who, after the Arab Spring revolts, launched a radical plan to bring democracy to their country. The film is a searing exposé of Syria’s war, and the tactical starvation, barrel bombs and other assaults on civilians by the regime.
Meet Syria’s Rescue Workers: Saving Lives, Building Peace. Amid the bombing and shelling of Syria’s war, hundreds of volunteers formed rescue squads on the principles of the Geneva Convention. These “White Helmets” pull their compatriots from rubble and danger without regard for sect or creed. USIP hosted two leaders of this movement to discuss ways to build peace in Syria. One of them, Khalid Harah, was tragically killed while conducting rescue work in 2016.

PM Netanyahu's Remarks at the Start of the Weekly Cabinet Meeting

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting, made the following remarks:
"The conference convening in Paris today is a useless conference. It is being coordinated between the French and the Palestinians. Its goal is to try and force terms on Israel that conflict with our national needs. Of course it pushes peace further away because it hardens the Palestinian positions and it also pushes them away from direct negotiations without preconditions. I must say that this conference is among the last twitches of yesterday's world. Tomorrow's world will be different – and it is very near.
Today the cabinet will hear – and also approve – a proposal by the Agriculture Minister for a five year plan for the Bedouin population in the Negev. The goal is to make order in the Negev and also to integrate the Bedouin population into the Israeli economy – in education, infrastructures, employment and many other fields. I commend the Agriculture Minister for this important initiative; it has many incentives and much logic. I hope that it will also receive full cooperation from all the residents of the Negev.
Today we are also submitting two proposals to the Cabinet, two decisions that will strengthen technological innovation in Israel. The first decision will offer incentives to the high-tech sector to increase the number of engineers and scientists and to significantly boost the number of graduates in the relevant university departments.
I remind you that our main problem in the high-tech sector is meeting demand; to this end we need the very highest quality and trained personnel.
The second decision deals with smart transportation. We will remove impediments to this industry which is developing very quickly, and it will help implement smart transportation on Israel's highways."
